Layering Light: Why One Ceiling Bulb Is Never Enough

A single ceiling fixture lights a room evenly, which sounds useful and rarely looks good. Real rooms have pools of light and pockets of shadow — that contrast is most of what reads as 'cozy' or 'considered.'

Think in three heights: low, mid, high

A floor lamp, a table lamp, and an overhead or wall light together create layers a single fixture can't. You don't need all three on at once — the point is having the option.

Let some corners stay dim on purpose

Not every part of a room needs to be lit. A dim corner gives the lit areas somewhere to contrast against, and it's usually the difference between a room that looks staged and one that looks lived in.
